ALL IN THE TIMING - Mesa Community College Theatre & Film Arts - October 7 - 15, 2016

Written by David Ives

Directed by: Kevin Dressler

All in the Timing, written by David Ives between 1987-1993, is comprised of six diverse, but equally hilarious one-act comedies, that focus on language and wordplay, existentialist perspectives on life, and the complications encountered in human interaction.  A Sure Thing reveals a couple on their first date, given the opportunity to reset and try again each time they say the “wrong” thing.  Words, Words, Words, explores three chimps; Milton, Swift, and Kafka who are locked in a room using the “infinite monkey theorem” whereby, given enough time monkeys, could compose any given text, even recreating Hamlet. The Universal Language has a con man peddling courses in a dubious language in which "hello" translates as "velcro" and "fraud" becomes "freud," who is transformed by his shy student’s faith.  Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread is a mini-musical parody based on the work of composer Philip Glass. In The Philadelphia, a man discovers that he’s entered that strange pocket of the universe where asking for the opposite is the only way to get what he wants and in Variations on the Death of Leon Trotsky, there are poetic Marxisms followed by him dying, over and over and over again.  You will be enchanted, perplexed, and enormously entertained by the varied and incisively intelligent premises.   Winner of the John Gassner Playwriting Award, premiering Off-Broadway in 1993 at Primary Stages and revived in 2013. Contains Adult Language.
