ASU Cast to Record Official Cast Album of the New Musical, THE ANXIETY PROJECT

Musical Theatre Writers RACHEL DEAN and DAVID BRUSH and Arizona State University Music Theatre and Opera are excited to announce the official cast album to be recorded and released for the new musical, The Anxiety Project. In a partnership that began with a staged concert reading with ASU students in 2018 and again as part of the Phoenix Theatre Company’s New Works Festival, the journey comes full circle with a cast of ASU students and musicians originating the roles for the official cast album of the piece to be available for purchase and streaming in 2020.

THE ANXIETY PROJECT official description: “Grad student Avery is in her final graduate semester and in just a few short weeks, she will earn her doctorate in psychology and open her own practice. That’s assuming she finishes her thesis – a study of the mechanics of mental illness and how science can change lives. Case after case, Avery becomes immersed in the lives of these patients – the day-to-day struggles with anxiety, depression, suicide and medication. When one of the cases hits very close to home, Avery realizes that numbers only tell part of the story of mental illness. Based on TRUE stories of REAL survivors and sufferers, The Anxiety Project is a deeply honest and hard-hitting look at mental health in America and the ways in which we are called to engage in an epidemic age.”
______________________________________________________________________
“Powerful. Painful. Beautiful. [The Anxiety Project] is an exploration of mental illness that we all need to experience” – Rebecca Rudnyk, Yab-Yum Music and Arts, Phoenix

“The book, music, lyrics and overall storytelling [Dean and Brush] create are superb and everything I think this artform can accomplish” – Kevin David Thomas (Broadway’s A Little Night Music and Les Miserables; Behind The Curtain podcast)

THE WRITERS:
DAVID BRUSH (Book and Lyrics) As producer: Off-Broadway - Hot Mess In Manhattan; Regional - Pump Up The Volume, The Consequences, Spring Awakening, 20Something. As director: Regional premieres of Next Thing You Know, Rent, 35mm: A Musical Exhibition, The Last Five Years, Tick Tick Boom. As writer: Summer of My German Soldier (American Harmony Prize 2014, Chicago Stages Finalist, London Concert Premiere) and The Big Picture (Music by Jim Farley), The Anxiety
Project, Amelia, and The Freaking Out of Emily Preston (Music by Rachel Dean). David
graduated from Regent University with an MA in Theatre as well as having assisted in
the development of over 15 new musicals including the development residency of Hot
Mess in Manhattan and work with many contemporary musical theatre writers. Most
recently, David served as director/musical director/conductor for award-winning regional
productions of Joseph…, Once On This Island, Children Of Eden, Aida, Big Fish, The
Drowsy Chaperone, Reasons To Be Pretty, Freaky Friday and over 30 others. David is
a member of The Dramatists Guild, theatre critic for the League of Cincinnati Theatres
(LCT), and faculty member in musical theatre at several universities.

RACHEL DEAN is a New York City-based composer, pianist, and music director. She is
a pianist for Hamilton and Moulin Rouge on Broadway, and has collaborated alongside
the likes of Luis Salgado, Brandon Uranowitz, Alysha Umphress, and Jennifer
Jancuska. An ASCAP award recipient, Rachel’s work has been performed in New York,
Tokyo, Miami, Ohio, Arizona, and New Jersey. Other musicals in development include
Amelia (with Brush), Medusa (with Wes Braver), and The Ballad of Janis Matthews and
the Dodo Scouts (with Giancarlo Rodaz). Rachel is a member of ASCAP and AFM
Local 802.

HISTORY: The Anxiety Project was created through a blog series on Ryan Scott
Oliver’s Crazytown: An Artist’s Asylum in which sufferers of anxiety/depression were
asked to anonymously submit their stories for Rachel Dean and David Brush to develop
into songs/scenes. Of the large amount of material presented, these real stories were
crafted down to a roughly 90-minute thematic concept musical. The songs were first
presented through Growing Pains – a developmental concert through Area Stage
Company in Miami, Florida (May 2015). After the concert, a full book was developed for
the show and was presented in a 10-day lab and staged reading with Queen City Queer
Theatre Collective in Cincinnati, Ohio under the direction of Lindsey Mercer (June
2016). Ms. Mercer directed a second staged reading with QCQTC with new changes in
October 2016. In February 2017, New York Film Academy in Manhattan presented a
more developed staged presentation under the direction of Robert Schneider (Memphis,
regional premiere) with musical direction by Kevin David Thomas (A Little Night Music,
Les Miserables, Broadway). In 2018, the show received further development with
Gotta2 Productions in Tokyo, Japan, Rubber City Theatre (Akron, Ohio) and as an
official selection of the Phoenix Theatre Festival of New American Theatre.

PERSONNEL: Directed by Kate Leonard; Orchestrations by Benedict Braxton-Smith.
The Anxiety Project features performances by Kade Bailey, Hahnna Christianson,
Griffin Leblanc Sara Louise, Gretta Perlmutter, Nellie Shuford, Gigi Sierra and
Cade Trotter; to be recorded at Tempest Recording Studios, engineered by Clarke
Rigsby. Produced by ASU Music Theatre and Opera - Brian DeMaris, Artistic
Director.

"With the rise of the #metoo movement over the past few years, many women have come forward to speak out about how they were victims of sexual harassment, assault and rape. While their stories are emotionally heartbreaking, there are also some people who question their motives or how truthful their memories are and also wonder why they didn't speak out right after the incident happened instead of waiting years or even decades later to bring up the horrific incidents of their past. Deirdre Kinahan's 2018 play Rathmines Road, is a painful reminder of the reality of these situations and why so many women choose not to speak out about these events right after they happen. The piece makes its American premiere at Theatre Artists Studio in a moving production with an emotionally fraught, believable, and heart-wrenching performance by Larah Pawlowski as a woman confronted by memories from her past...." -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

"Larah Pawlowski seethes in a pressure-cooker of a performance as Sandra, a woman whose long-suppressed memory of one night's ordeal is unlocked during an evening of explosive confrontations.
However, in Deirdre Kinahan's cathartic play, RATHMINES ROAD (at Theatre Artists Studio through October 20th), no character is left untouched by Sandra's torment, nor are the salient issues of rape, gender discrimination, and accountability left unaddressed. The Dublin-based playwright, acclaimed for her intense personal dramas, has guaranteed an evening of high stakes encounters ~ and the cast of The Studio delivers on that guarantee.... - Herbert Paine, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)

Arizona Equity Actors Form Coalition

Theatre community struggles to secure proper sustaining capital to operate after the Great Recession of 2008.

  • Several prominent professional theatre companies in the Valley close their doors.
  • Producers struggle to find the financing to pay union actors a living wage with health and pension benefits.
  • Arizona members of the union of professional actors (Actors’ Equity Association) form a grassroots movement to find a positive solution to these challenges.
  • Arizona Equity Member Coalition (AZEMC)is comprised of Arizona Equity members who are united to increase awareness, promote, expand, nurture and help sustain Arizona theatre companies that provide union contracts, thereby increasing opportunities for local Equity artists.

Actors’ Equity artists make a vital contribution to the arts scene in Arizona. Theatre companies contract with Actors Equity Association in order to provide artists a living wage, contribute to their health insurance and pension plans as well as provide a safe, comfortable, working environment with fair and equitable working conditions. These theatre companies understand that the very product they present to the public is the result of the craft, training, experience, and hard work of the artists they employ. They are not only contributing to the artistic landscape of our community, but the economic engine of our city as well.

We are experiencing a time of renewed dedication by many theatre companies across our state to commit to finding ways to begin using Equity contracts in their productions or increase the number of contracts they currently use. However, these companies need support in order to keep up the momentum. That is where AZEMC comes in. We will work to find creative ways to promote the work of local Equity artists to the general public and celebrate, support and encourage those theatre companies that provide those artists Equity contracts.

This is not prepared or endorsed by Actors’ Equity Association and the views and positions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of AEA.

DUTCHMAN - Tempe Center for the Arts - October 4-19, 2019

Tempe Center for the Arts kicks off its 2019-20 TCA Presents season with the regional premiere of DUTCHMAN, an emotionally fraught and incendiary play, by LeRoi Jones / Amiri Baraka, Oct. 4–19, 2019.

Set on a New York subway, DUTCHMAN, centers on an encounter between a politically moderate, middle-class black man and a liberal white woman who match wits in a sexualized game of cat and mouse that leads them into a violent conclusion. The searing confrontation amplifies the dimensions of racial conflict in America.

The play, “a 1964 one-act whose flinty racial dialogue can still be counted on to produce sparks, is about white rubbing against black, hope against reality, and languid desire against fervent ambition.” – The Washington Post

DUTCHMAN features Shae Kennedy Leonard as “Lula,” Calvin Worthen as “Clay,” and Cornelius Williams as “Conductor.” Ralph Remington, TCA Producing Artistic Director, will direct.

“It’s an honor to bring this work to Arizona audiences,” Remington says. “I hope that it will inspire thoughtful and spirited conversations leading to decisive action.”

The production runs Oct. 4–19, 2019 at Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Pkwy, Tempe, AZ  85281. Tickets are $25 ($10 for Preview performances Oct. 4-10) and are on sale at tempecenterforthearts.com, the TCA Box Office or by calling (480) 350-2822.

OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES - Herberger Theater Center - December 25-January 19, 2020

“OLD JEWS TELLING JOKES,” AN EVENING IN THE CATSKILLS WITH JOKES, SKITS, SONG AND DANCE; NATIONAL TOURING PRODUCTION

December 25-January 19, 2020 at Herberger Theater Center

Philip Roger Roy and Playhouse Productions, Inc. announce a limited engagement of the off Broadway hit Old Jews Telling Jokes at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe in Phoenix. The national touring production will open on Christmas Day, Wed., Dec. 25 at 7 pm and continue through Sun., January 19, 2020.

Old Jews Telling Jokes, created by Peter Gethers and Daniel Okrent and directed by Jeremy Quinn, has been called a “pickle-barrel full of giggles” and showcases five actors in a revue-type production that pays tribute to and reinvents classic jokes of the past and present.

It celebrates the rich tradition of Jewish humor and “all the rabbis, complaining wives, fed-up husbands, patience-challenged physicians, gossiping ladies, and competitive men’ populating it,” said Producer Philip Roger Roy.

The humor is suggestive and even raunchy as the ‘Old Jews’ make fun of themselves as well as followers of every other religion.

“Think Catskills comedy with jokes, songs, stories, skits, and routines,” Roy added. “The humor is reminiscent of the great Jewish comedians from Buddy Hackett and Alan King to Tom Lehrer, and more.”

Warning: Adult (Bawdy) Humor. Not for audiences under 21.

“A non-stop laugh fest.” – The Huffington Post

Synopsis

A very special Friend-and-Relation tells Christopher Robin a story of a Christmas Eve very long ago (about last year) when Eeyore, the old gray donkey who lives by himself in the thistle corner of Hundred-Acre Wood, was absolutely miserable. It seems that he lost his tail and Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet got all of their friends and a search was organized. There is a great deal of fun and excitement, plus delightful songs, in the adventure that follows. Its theme, which concerns caring, sharing and the importance of cultivating friends, makes this a very special and enchanting musical suitable for any occasion. Book, music and lyrics by James W. Rodgers. Inspired by A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh.

review - MISS SAIGON - National Tour: ASU Gammage

"..While Miss Saigon plays somewhat into stereotypical portrayals, it has a score rich with soaring ballads and a simple yet heartbreaking story about a young Asian woman and a white American soldier who find each other toward the end of the Vietnam War. With a fantastic cast and visually stunning creative aspects, the touring production is quite impressive...Emily Bautista is powerful and emotionally thrilling as Kim. Her singing voice is rich and bright and soars with emotion fused into every lyric...As The Engineer, Red Concepcion is full of energy and charisma...Chris is haunted by the events of his past, and Anthony Festa does a very good job in providing some layers to the character. His singing voice is exceptional ...Seeing Miss Saigon today, the plot seems somewhat more predictable and melodramatic from when I first saw it almost thirty years ago. I also wonder if the fact that the Vietnam War is now 30 years further behind us and that Vietnam is now a vacation destination has softened some of the emotional relevance of the time period and the feeling an audience now has concerning the impact the war had on the Vietnamese people. Fortunately, the musical is still moving, especially in the arc of Kim's character and the intense hope she has that Chris will return, and there is a stirring theatrical sense about the show in the way the structure of the plot uses shifts in time and flashbacks to advance the narrative and how many scenes explode into elaborate production numbers. Also, while it's an epic romance of two young people set against the historical event of the end of the Vietnam War and the fall of Saigon in 1975, the issues and topics it focuses on, from the plight of the immigrants trying to find a better future for themselves to America's involvement in other country's wars, and the subjugation of women, are still incredibly relevant today.
