The Musical Celebration of the Gospel

Don’t miss this family-friendly, eye-catching celebration when Christ’s teachings take center stage at Ethington Theatre.

Grand Canyon University’s Ethington Theatre comes to life as the musical “Godspell” vibrantly colors the stage with beloved tunes and dance. This Broadway sensation is composed by three time Grammy and Academy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz, who is also behind the hit musicals “Wicked,” “Pippin” and “Children of Eden.” Prepare to become mesmerized by a joyous and comedic religious experience that pays homage to the historical life of Jesus Christ.

A Spiritual Singalong Takes Stage

“Godspell” takes you on a musical adventure full of parables from “The Gospel According to Matthew.” Jesus recruits a jovial troupe of followers who perform these parables to teach lessons, from being a good Samaritan and following the golden rule to glorifying God. Parables pay tribute to lyrics from traditional hymns, while the group also partakes in games, tomfoolery and pantomime. Among a collection of eclectic songs ranging in style, “Day by Day,” from the original cast album, is known as an international hit. The story eventually takes a turn when Judas betrays Jesus, ending with The Last Supper and Jesus’ haunting Crucifixion. Above all, “Godspell” shares Jesus’ message of friendship, loyalty, tolerance and love.
