"The death of a loved one can sometimes be the catalyst that forces an individual to question many things, such as the existence of God, the afterlife, just how close their relationships are with their friends and family members, and even debate the merits of their own past actions and ponder their responsibilities in the world. In Bert V. Royal's Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, it is the death of a beloved pet that sets the mind of CB, the pet's owner, spinning. But Royal also makes the characters in the piece identifiable by making them grown up, teenage versions of the gang from the "Peanuts" comic strip and TV specials who are now high school students with a multitude of issues and no longer the innocent, beloved characters from the cartoons. Spotlight Youth Theatre's production is exceptional, with a superb cast and masterful direction that doesn't shy away from the raw topics it presents. It is a stunning production of a play that beautifully addresses important issues. The way these issues creep up on you has an ability to shock and stir emotions while also demonstrating the power in the simplicity of Royal's script....Director Kenny Grossman has elicited both a sense of realism and an abundance of humor from his skilled cast. The play addresses some frank and adult issues, and Grossman and his cast don't downplay the serious nature of the show. While some people may question having this show performed by a cast of teens, it actually provides a sense of vibrant honesty and realistic undertones to have age-appropriate actors playing these high school aged kids. ...With an excellent cast and an ending that evokes a sense of beauty in how it ties into the classic words of Charles Schulz and shows how the optimism of Charlie Brown is still vibrantly alive, Spotlight Youth Theatre's production of Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead makes for a loving, powerful, and emotionally rich look at beloved characters.
