A Conversation with Johanna Carlisle about her upcoming cabaret show "I Hate Musicals"
by Gil Benbrook
Johanna Carlisle is a well-known staple on stages in Phoenix. She's appeared in dozens of shows across the Valley - musicals, comedies and dramas - including last season delivering a stellar portrayal of Diane in Nearly Naked Theatre's Next to Normal. She's won accolades, awards and glowing notices and just finished appearing as the Widow Corney in Oliver! at Arizona Broadway Theatre.
But this coming Friday she is doing something she's never done before, headlining her first every one woman cabaret show entitled "I Hate Musicals - an Evening of Song with Johanna Carlisle," with Jeff Kennedy as her musical director and accompanist.
This special event is a fundraiser for Light Walker Theatrical, a live event services company founded last year by Justyn Walker and Colin Carter. These two Phoenix based theatre technicians decided to combine their skills, and years of experience between them, in order to better partner with local artists and theatre companies to bring new works and provocative content to the stage. Light Walker has worked with several companies in town and will be back on stage in September, designing a show around a previously derogatory word.
Carlisle was thrilled to help Light Walker with their fund raising event and she sat down to answer some questions about her concert and her career.
First let’s get the facts straight on the title of your upcoming cabaret. “I Hate Musicals” is a comic song from the musical Ruthless and clearly not the way you feel, right? I know you sang that song when you appeared in that show at Phoenix Theatre but what made you go with such an ironic title for your solo cabaret show?
"Clearly I love Musicals, and yes that is Lita Encore's song from Ruthless. I got to play her in 2013 when Ruthless was the grand opening show for Phoenix Theatre's Hormel Theatre! The beauty of that song is the irony in it. The last thing I hate are musicals! As for the naming of the show, the actual messenger conversation between Justyn and I went like this:
Justyn -
What about "I got Rhythm"
Oh wait I've got it, " let me sing and I'm happy"
Johanna -
Still not quite right.
Justyn -
Hmmm
Johanna -
"I Hate Musicals an evening of song with Johanna Carlisle"
Justyn -
OMG
Johanna -
It just hit me
Justyn -
lol I like it
How did this cabaret come about?
"Justyn and Colin approached me to see if I would be interested in helping them raise money for their new theatre. I was so happy to help out! They know I am working with Michael Barnard and Jeff Kennedy on an Ethel Merman cabaret. I told them that was not ready yet but I could put something together just for them and here we are!"
I know this show is a kick off for the new theatre company, Light Walker Theatrical, have you worked with Justyn Walker, the co-founder of the company, before?
Justyn and I worked together at Phoenix Theatre when he was an intern there.
Is this concert more a review of songs you’ve performed in shows in the past, sorta a journey through the roles you’ve played in your career, or songs from shows you’d like to appear in?
It's a small look at my past and a glimpse at what my next cabaret will feature. I have had an amazing career over the past 40+ years so do to a full journey would be far too long of a show. Ha! I would have loved to have done songs I would like to sing in the future but since I was putting this together while also performing in two shows, Oliver! and Cinderella Cinderella (both at ABT), I felt it was better to not try and learn too much new stuff.
What are some of the songs we can expect to hear you sing?
I have a nice mix of what I call my "hits" from Annie, In The Heights, Toxic Avenger, etc and then great tunes from Gershwin, Porter and Berlin. I don't want to give away the songs. <wink> Sorry the Toxic song is not my Act 1 finale. Too hard to do without costumes and set!
What do you like most about performing this sort of music in front of a live audience, where you are basically playing yourself, and not a character?
This is my first time doing a full cabaret. I'll be able to answer this better after the show! I do think the characters still shine through when I sing. It's hard to not let them come through.
A year ago at this time you were playing Diane in Next to Normal at Nearly Naked Theatre. You’d go on to win an ariZoni award for your performance. Earlier in that season you played the dual role of the wicked Mayor and the lovable mom in The Toxic Avenger at Phoenix Theatre, which also won you a Zoni. Those are very different women which you played expertly, which shows how adept you are in playing both comic and dramatic parts. How difficult is it to go from comedy to drama and back again, and do you prefer one over the other?
I do not prefer one over the other although I am mostly cast in comedy roles. Robrt Pela has often referred to me as a young Kaye Ballard, although I bet now he might not use the word young. Comedy roles are more common in musical theatre for character actors like me however when I am given the opportunity to do drama, I am all over it. Some of my favourite roles have been dramatic ones. I also flip flop between musicals and plays because I love both so much!!
You’ve appeared in dozens of shows across the Valley, regularly working at both Phoenix Theatre and Arizona Broadway Theatre, in both lead roles and supporting parts. What were some of your favorite roles you’ve played?
"In no particular order:
Abuela Claudia in In The Heights (Phoenix Theatre)
Mary in The Whale (Stray Cat Theatre)
Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers (Nearly Naked Theatre)
Madam Thernardier in Les Miserables (Az Broadway Theatre)
Sarraghina in Nine (PT)
Diana in Next To Normal (NNT)
Mary/Calcetina in Learn to be Latina (SCT)
Miss Hannigan in Annie (ABT)
Miss Andrew in Mary Poppins (PT)
I need to stop before I list most of my resume! HAHA!"
And dream roles you still wish to play one day?
I would love to be Audrey II, Mrs Lovett, Margaret White, Dolly Levi, The Duchess in Nice Work, oh and would someone produce American Psycho so I can be Patrick's mom? Please and Thank you!

reviews - AIDA - Hale Centre Theatre
Ashley Jackson photo by Nick Woodward-Shaw |
Click here for more information on this production that runs through July 1st.
"Entering the theatre-in-the-round for the new production of the musical Aida at Gilbert’s Hale Centre Theatre is like being seated within the walls of a museum exhibit. Hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt, or the words of gods, surround the house walls against a backdrop of painted stone. ..The statues standing there...are meant to be that of Aida, Princess of Nubia, and Radames, Captain of the Egyptian army, and it is their love story, introduced in song by the third member of the tragic love affair, Amneris, Princess of Egypt, that takes us and everyone else in the museum, back in time, when Pharaohs ruled.....a nicely directed, well-blocked production from M.Seth Raines who uses all areas of the house in order to tell the story...while the show can be admired for its invention and its in-the-round adaptation, it lacks in excitement, and that has a lot more to do with Elton John’s score with lyrics from Tim Rice than Hale’s production. ...Ben Mason’s Captain Radames conveys an effective sense of personal torment and conflict when torn between his duty and his love for two women, even if his singing voice lacks that extra punch required for these power ballads to come alive, while Victoria Fairclough’s spoiled daughter of Pharaoh injects much needed humor in the proceedings, describing herself as a princess with fabulous hair. But it’s with the show’s Aida, the princess taken into slavery, where the producers and casting directors, David and Corrin Dietlin, have hit the jackpot. ...making her Hale Centre debut, Ashley Jackson is simply glorious. She shines, with or without a spotlight....." -David Appleford, Valley Screen and Stage (click here to read the complete review)
"...With a Tony winning score by Elton John and Tim Rice, and a hip updated book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls and David Harry Hwang, Aida focuses on a love triangle full of intrigue and romance. Hale Centre Theatre's production features three exceptional leads, sharp direction, and exquisite creative elements....While the musical is quite good, there are a few shortcomings in the score and book. Elton John's music is varied but it is also pop-rock ballad heavy and features two songs for Radames' father Zoser that are incredibly weak in their music style and the hip hop orchestrations that are vastly at odds with the rest of the score. ...the score sometimes interjects yet another ballad where dialogue could suffice. Fortunately, those ballads are all quite good. Also, the modern-day museum scenes that begin and end the show give the story an uplifting message that proves that love truly is eternal. While Hale can't do much to fix the few small drawbacks in the score and book, their three leads are superb, with Ashley Jackson making a sensational debut in her first performance at Hale. ..Jackson is simply exquisite as this fierce and forceful yet entirely passionate woman. As Radames, Ben Mason's ability to portray the character's infatuation and intrigue of Aida through his keen facial expressions and subtle gestures is exceptional. ...Victoria Fairclough's singing voice, with earthy, gutsy tones and a strong clarity, is equally adept in ensuring that Amneris' songs soar. ...Director M. Seth Reines, choreographer Cambrian James, and music director JR McAlexander form a dynamic trio who deliver nonstop and striking vocals and visuals throughout. ...The combination of a gifted cast who deliver stunning vocals, crisp staging, and Hale's always impressive creative elements manage to offset most of the small issues I have with the score and book, which makes Hale's Aida a powerful and emotionally rich musical journey. " -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)
"... Sir Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA, their blockbuster adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, now pulling heart strings at Hale Centre Theatre...Ashley Jackson, Victoria Fairclough, and Ben Mason deliver towering, indeEd Royal, performances that imbue this production with sustained warmth, integrity, and vitality and their characters with distinctive and relatable authenticity....In the end, true love is affirmed. What is also affirmed is the intelligent direction of M. Seth Reines and the extraordinary talent of his gifted cast. " - Herbert Paine, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)

review - LEA SALONGA WITH THE PHOENIX SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Lea Salonga |
"...Lea Salonga's recent concerts with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra featured exceptional singing from Salonga and skilled playing from the PSO on excellent renditions of many songs associated with Salonga as well as numerous other hits from the Broadway and pop songbooks.
Lea Salonga won the Tony and Olivier Awards for her role of Kim in Miss Saigon and also sang for two Disney princesses, in the films Aladdin and Mulan. The passion she brings to songs from the musicals and films she has appeared in is just as strong when she sings songs for roles she didn't originate. She also makes sure that the meaning of every word she is singing is delivered with clarity. ...she still instills each word of the song with power...in "I'd Give My Life for You" from Miss Saigon, which is the passionate plea of a young mother that is also filled with pain and anger. "Reflection" from Mulan and "Burn" from Hamilton, while two very different songs, both focus on how a woman can become strong when faced with adversity and forced to stand alone without a man by her side. Three Stephen Sondheim songs, "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music, "Another Hundred People" from Company, and "Something's Coming" from West Side Story (music by Leonard Bernstein), also were a testament to Salonga's ability to inflict nuance and complete understanding on lyrics that are filled with soul searching, desire, and personal inflection. On all of these songs, as well as the other songs she sang, her enunciation was flawless and her punctuated delivery of each lyric was filled with meaning....two numbers from Les Misérables...were simply exceptional. ...In addition to musical and film songs, Salonga also included a medley of numbers written by Michael Legrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman featuring a lovely version of the Oscar-winning "The Windmills of Your Mind" and a soaring "A Piece of Sky" from the film Yentl...Salonga's stellar vocal control is full of power, precision and clarity. Her warm stage presence, clear connection with both the audience and the orchestra, personal stories, and spontaneous interjections made the whole affair genuine and refreshing..." -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)
