"...Robert Harling's play Steel Magnolias continually gets produced across the country and it's easy to see why. With strong, independent and lovable characters and an abundance of witty dialogue, it is a crowd-pleasing play. In Phoenix there are two productions planned for this summer, including the beautifully cast and expertly directed production that plays on Monday and Tuesday nights at Hale Centre Theatre through July....Director Jere Van Patten has found a crackerjack cast of six strong and gifted actresses who bring these loveable characters to life. He does a phenomenal job staging the action in Hale's in-the-round space so the audience never feels they are missing out on anything in the plot while also being drawn into the plight of the characters...M'Lynn is the voice of reason in the play and (Linsey) Maxson is excellent in the role, especially in how she portrays M'Lynn's emotional outburst toward the end of the play...I last saw (Amy Jo) Halliday as Diana in Next to Normal two seasons ago and with the thick Southern accent, quick comic timing, and funny body language she uses as Truvy, you'd never know it was the same actress. That's how good she is. Shelby is a young woman who is stubborn, always upbeat, energetic and optimistic and who tries to live her life to the fullest and Meg Farnsworth is a glorious and glowing firecracker of movement and energy in the role. As Clairee, Kandyce Hughes is elegant and refined with a clear depiction of this wealthy woman who isn't sure what to do with herself now that her husband has died....Beth Anne Johnson is hilarious and an absolute steamroller who doesn't let anyone or anything get in her way as Ouiser, the cranky, loud and cantankerous, but entirely lovable, woman with a rough exterior that is just housing a big heart underneath. Kamie Tierce hits all the right marks to beautifully portray Annelle.... Truvy states that "laughter through tears" is her favorite emotion and you will most likely find yourself laughing through tears due to the wonderful cast, beautiful direction, and perfect creative elements in Hale Centre Theatre's production of this crowd-pleasing show."   -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

Musical Theatre of Anthem Announces Auditions for MATILDA, JR on August 14 and Audition Prep Workshop on August 12 & 13

Musical Theatre of Anthem (MTA) announces auditions for Matilda Jr., a story about a special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson. Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace! Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda JR. is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

A CHORUS LINE - Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre - July 30 - August 8, 2021

Book by James Kirkwood & Nicholas Dante
Music By Marvin Hamlisch
Lyrics by Edward Kleban

A Chorus Line is a celebration of those unsung heroes of the American Musical Theatre: the chorus dancers– those valiant, over dedicated, underpaid, highly trained performers who back up the star or stars and often make them look even more talented than they are. It is also a celebration of the American Musical itself. A Chorus Line is also about competition, and competition might easily be the common denominator that grabs the audience and holds it by the collective heartstring until the final, ultimate choices are made. For everyone, at one time or another, puts his life on the line. We all compete, no matter what business we’re in, for promotion, for attention, for approval and for love. Specifically, A CHORUS LINE takes the audience through the final grueling audition run by the director, Zach, for a new Broadway musical.

Friday & Saturday at 7:30pm
Saturday & Sunday at 2:00pm

review - KILL SOCRATES, A COMEDY - Don Bluth Front Row Theatre

highlights from local critics reviews - (click link at bottom of each review to read complete review)

Click here for more information on this production that runs through July 24

"...In the new play Kill Socrates: A Comedy, making its Arizona premiere in a smartly directed and well-cast production at Don Bluth Front Row Theatre, playwright Amanda Schaar uses comedy, witty wordplay, and modern sensibilities to take us inside the mind of Socrates to witness his thoughts and feelings on the day of, and the moments after, his trial and up to his subsequent death. With funny dialogue and well-written characterizations, Schaar has crafted a drama that is very humorous while also moving and ultimately heartbreaking....Tom Koelbel is direct, clear and forceful as Socrates, a man who is deeply convinced that he did nothing wrong and someone who, while he questions the way things are done, is also committed to obeying the laws....Koelbel delivers a beautiful performance. Van Rockwell does a good job depicting Socrates' friend Phaedo, who is struggling with his own predicament concerning his relationship with his father....J. Kevin Tallent expertly plays two completely different roles...his portrayal of Meletus is a downright hoot. His varied, repeated and loud proclamations to "think of the children" whenever he is at a loss for words during the trial, and as basically his main proof of evidence of Socrates' guilt, are hilarious. He is just as good in act two, when he returns in a dramatic role as the quiet, simple and friendly guard....a winning production of a funny, charming, moving, interesting and intriguing new play."   -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)
