Paradise Valley Community College's 2021 / 2022 Season!

Sylvia
by A.R. Gurney
Directed by Andrea Robertson

Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and poodle, and played by a human actress, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.

Outside Amphitheatre- October 1-3

The Curious Savage
by John Patrick
Directed by Gary Zaro

Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her husband and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of her grown-up stepchildren’s efforts to get their hands on it. Knowing that the widow’s wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of the fortune, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium hoping to “bring her to her senses.”

CPA - Nov. 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21  and live streaming on the same dates

Perfect Arrangement
by Topher Payne
directed by Joe Flowers

It’s 1950, and new colors are being added to the Red Scare. Two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. There’s just one problem: Both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover. Inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement, as two “All-American” couples are forced to stare down the closet door.

Studio Theatre- Feb. 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27

Romance/Romance
Barry Harman
Directed by Andrea Robertson

This delightful pairing of one-act musicals, one classic and one modern, takes a comical and moving look at the mysteries of love. Act I, based on Schnitzler's The Little Comedy, is a delightful romp through the sexual ennui of turn-of-the-century Vienna, as two wealthy but bored socialites masquerade as impoverished bohemians seeking romance. Act II, based on the Jules Renard play Summer Share, explores modern affection and disaffection as two married couples share a summer house in the Hamptons. An Off Off Broadway sensation that successfully moved to Broadway, Romance/Romance is a charming and tuneful small-cast gem

CPA- April 1, 2,3, 8, 9, 10 and live streaming the same dates

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
by Robert L Freedman and Steven Lutvak
directed by Andrea Robertson

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he's eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D'Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives without being caught and become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what of love? Because murder isn't the only thing on Monty's mind....

CPA- June 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26th and live streaming

SHREK, THE MUSICAL - Actor's Youth Theatre - September 9 - September 18, 2021

Set in a mythical “once upon a time” sort of land, Shrek the Musical is the story of a hulking green ogre who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anything that crosses his path, retreats to an ugly green swamp to exist in happy isolation. Suddenly, a gang of homeless fairy-tale characters (Pinocchio, Cinderella, the Three Pigs, you name it) raid his sanctuary, saying they’ve been evicted by the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad. So Shrek strikes a deal: I’ll get your homes back, if you give me my home back! But when Shrek and Farquaad meet, the Lord strikes a deal of his own: He’ll give the fairy-tale characters their homes back, if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona. Shrek obliges, yet finds something appealing–something strange and different–about this pretty princess. He likes her. A lot. But why does she always run off when the sun sets?

“… This satirical stage musical adaptation…plays up the humor of the horrors of smoking weed…Scottsdale Community Players' talented cast are all in their late teens or early 20s, which works well to depict the teenagers and young adult characters in the show, and with bright voices and good comic timing their production makes for two hours of hilarity, hijinks, and silly fun…. With appropriately exaggerated performances that play up the comical dialogue, lyrics and situations, director Peter Bish has found exceptional leads and fun ensemble members who don't miss a beat…. a cutting and hilarious musical comedy that pointedly mocks exploitation films and seminars that preached about the evils of marijuana. With a wonderful cast and clear direction, Scottsdale Community Players delivers an amusing and entertaining production of this smart political satire.”  -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

Click here for more information on this production that runs through August 22

"Pump Boys and Dinettes is a short but sweet musical that's set several decades ago in a small town in North Carolina. While there isn't much of a plot, there are more than a dozen upbeat songs that range from folk to country and pop. The enthusiastic and talented cast of singer-musicians in Phoenix Theatre Company's production create warm, down to earth characters. There is an abundance of charm and nostalgia in this bright and lively, crowd pleasing show...."   -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

"...Director D. Scott Withers, himself a veteran performer/director of musical theatre, both regional and national, has assembled a just-right ensemble of six musical performers who cheerfully embody who they are. Characters talk and share their thoughts directly to the audience. It's their upbeat, positive friendliness and their eager desire to welcome you to their world, if only for a short time, that wins you over the moment they appear..."  David Appleford, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)

All Puppet Players announce Season General Auditions for August 9

All Puppet Players – Season Auditions

All Puppet Players' season consists of Creature From The Black Lagoon, Die Hard: A Christmas Story, Reservoir Dogs and Hamlet Has No Legs. All productions are Avenue Q style puppets with the actor masked behind them.

Character Breakdown
Looking for professional actors, with a history of taking themselves too seriously, ready to be silly and completely out of their element. While our shows are scripted, we are looking for actors who can “go with the flow” as our shows tend to rely on improv moments. You do not need to be good at improv to apply. We will put you at ease and teach you the fine art of stopping a show, to yell at an audience member!

We are not trying to scare you away but entice you to try something different as a performer in our upcoming puppet theater productions. All productions are Avenue Q style puppets with the actor masked behind them.

Voice talent should have two or three distinct character voices. Strong puppeteers not required, but we are looking for someone who is willing to work to get better.

What To Prepare
Actors should prepare for an initial video audition where we work on your puppetry skills. No puppet required, but character voices should be prepared. We might throw a few voice options at you, so be ready for some light character work.

We will go through several puppet exercises to make sure you can mouth words and emote with your hand. We will be singing Row-Row-Row Your Boat, so you might want to work on that too!
