Show Synopsis:
Real Women Have Curves is a full-length coming of age play set in East Los Angeles. The play takes place in a small sewing factory where 5 plus sized women work hard to meet the almost impossible production deadlines. It is told from the point of view of Ana, a newly high school graduated, Mexican-American, who has aspirations of going to college and becoming a writer. The play deals with themes of cultural expectations, gender politics, body image, and the Latina immigrant experiment. It is told in a humorous warmhearted way with which everyone can relate too. In a world of unrealistic expectations on image the play reminds us that everyone is beautiful in their own way and that Real Women Have Curves.
*Although there is no nudity required, actors must be comfortable being in their underwear for one pivotal scene in the play.
Character Breakdown:
Ana Garcia (plays 18)-The youngest of the 5 women. She has just graduated from high school and dreams of attending college. Unlike other women in her family, Ana has a strong stance on politics and feminism.
Estela Garcia (plays 25-30)-Ana’s older sister and owner of the sewing shop where the women work. Estela is undocumented and is afraid to apply for amnesty because of the money she owes for her business. She is often nervous and frenetic. Although she wants to be, she is not quite as outspoken as Ana.
Carmen Garcia (plays 45-55)-Ana and Estela’s mother and the oldest of the 5 women. She is a traditional Mexican mother who will love you with all her heart, but also has no problem throwing her chancla at you. She is not afraid to speak her mind.
Pancha (plays 40-50)-The most plus-sized of the 5. She is very comfortable with her body and happy with her life despite the fact that she cannot meet the cultural expectations of having children. She is sassy and sarcastic. Carmen and she share a lot of the same ideas, especially when it comes to traditional cultural norms.
Rosali (plays 20-30)-She is often seen as the most sound of the 5 women. She is a bit thinner than the other women due to her constant dieting. She is very tender and tries always to keep the peace between the women.
