ariZoni Theatre Association awards David Hemphill and Don Bluth with Lifetime Achievement Awards

The ariZoni Theatre Association is proud to announce that this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to two iconic figures in the Arizona arts community: David Hemphill and Don Bluth.

David Hemphill, Executive Director of the Black Theatre Troupe, has been a driving force behind the oldest African American theater in the Southwestern United States. Founded in 1970, the Black Theatre Troupe has a long history of producing powerful, culturally relevant productions that celebrate African American voices and stories. Hemphill’s leadership and dedication to promoting diversity in the arts have made an indelible impact on Arizona’s theater community, earning him this well-deserved recognition.

Legendary animator and theater producer Don Bluth will also be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contributions to both film and theater. Bluth began his career at Disney, working on iconic animated films such as Sleeping Beauty and Robin Hood, before leaving to establish his own animation company. After overseeing the 20th Century Fox animation studio in Phoenix, Bluth turned his creative energy to live theater, starting with intimate productions in his own living room. His passion grew into the Don Bluth Front Row Theatre in Scottsdale, a beloved venue known for its warm, immersive performances. Bluth’s artistic legacy, spanning both animation and live performance, continues to inspire audiences across Arizona and beyond.

Hemphill and Bluth will be honored at this year's 2024 ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence on Tuesday, October 8 at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.  Tickets are available HERE
