Affectionately referred to by Elton John as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” and praised by The New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Grammy®-nominated Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. He achieved success by carving out his own singular sound in the worlds of rock, opera, theatre, dance, and film. Wainwright has released eight studio albums, three DVDs, and three live albums. His album Rufus Does Judy, recorded at Carnegie Hall in 2006, was nominated for a Grammy®. His latest release is Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets, which features nine adaptations of William Shakespeare’s sonnets and guest appearances by Helena Bonham Carter, Carrie Fisher, William Shatner, Florence Welch, and Wainright’s sister, Martha, among others. Musically, Wainwright has collaborated with many other artists, including Robbie Williams, Elton John, Paul Simon, Antony Hegarty, David Byrne, Joni Mitchell, Guy Chambers, Burt Bacharach, and Boy George, to name a few.
Additionally, Wainwright has made a name for himself in the classical world. His much-acclaimed first opera, Prima Donna, premiered at the Manchester International Festival in July 2009. The opera was subsequently performed in London at Sadler’s Wells in April 2010, in Toronto at the Luminato Festival in June 2010, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House in February 2012. Now fully established as a composer of operas, he was commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company to write his second opera based on the story of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and Antinous. The new opera, Hadrian, premiered in Toronto on October 13, 2018.
Robert Ellis is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who blends country, pop, and jazz. His latest release, Texas Piano Man, is a record that nods at its honky-tonk roots as he finds more room to roam, pulling from a tradition set by Billy Joel, Leon Russell, and Elton John.
