Call for Playwrights and Directors for Mesa Encore Theatre's Club MET ZOOM PLAY FESTIVAL

Guidelines for Play Submissions

  • The plays must be written (or re-written) to work in the medium of Zoom. In other words, incorporating the online nature of the production is key.

  • Extra credit for writing a play that feeds into a theme of "Club MET" (vacations, get-aways, beach longings, etc. and/or exploring the idea of Mesa Encore Theatre (MET), or community theatre in general, as a pathway to getting out of ones real life and into a fantasy/better world!).
  • The plays should be no longer than 20 minutes in running time but can be far shorter (think 10-12 pages).
  • Because of the nature of how Zoom plays are presented, it would be difficult to use plays with more than 6 characters.
  • Plays must be submitted to David Chorley at davidchorley@gmail.com no later than 10:00PM,  Tuesday 9/1/20.
  • Plays must be written with the confines of the pandemic in mind – it will be hard to choose a play that uses far-out props or settings that would be difficult to re-create in this environment.
  • The extent of playwright involvement during the rehearsal process will be considered on an individual basis by the MET Artistic staff, the Director and the Playwright's preference.
  •  Playwrights of all ages and levels of experience are encouraged to submit a play!
  • If you would like an extra challenge (a la the 24-hour theatre model) we can provide you with a cast of actors so you can create your play specific to them! We will get you the actor information no later than 8/28, which would give you only 4 days to write a Zoom play specifically for those actors. If this appeals to you please let David know at davidchorley@gmail.com asap and we can make these arrangements. This is, of course, optional.

Guidelines for Directors

  • Directors will oversee casting of the shows based on the pool presented from our general auditions.  This will begin as soon as we are able to match the actors with the plays – no later than 9/2.
  • Directors will organize all rehearsals virtually through Zoom starting 9/2.
  • If props/costumes are required, the director is responsible for working those details out with the actors.  Our hope is that any needed props can be what is already at the performer’s disposal. There is no budget for additional props/costumes.
  • There will be two mandatory “tech” rehearsals to run through the show through Zoom – these will take place on Wednesday 9/23 and Thursday 9/24.
  • The directors must be present on the Zoom call during performances which will be live-streamed on YouTube September 25-27.

If you have interest in directing please submit a resume to David Chorley at davidchorley@gmail.com no later than 10:00PM, Tuesday 9/1/2020.

*to involve as many people as possible, we will want separate writers and directors as opposed to having someone write and direct the same show.

** based on turn-out we may be able to do different plays on different nights, but the idea as of now is to organize a festival with the same shows performed live all three days. If we end up with more options, we may look to expand this.

*** there is no compensation being offered to playwrights, directors or actors for this project

Starlight Community Theater announces auditions for DRACULA for August 29

Directed by Ric Alpers

In this time of uncertainty, STARLIGHT COMMUNITY THEATER is planning to officially open our 2020-21 Season with DRACULA written by John Mattera based on the story by Bram Stoker!  While we intend for an 8 performance run in our theater, the location and or performance dates could change depending on the course of the pandemic. The inital few weeks of rehearsal will be done on-line.  We will move to rehearsals in the theater as conditions permit.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR ONLY ONE AUDITION SLOT on Saturday, August 29.

SIGN UP HERE

Audition link will be sent to you after you have signed up for a specific slot.

Prepare a 1.5 to 2 minute story to tell during the audition time.  Director wants to see how you tell a story and engage others.  (This is storytelling not a monologue.)

Submit a completed audition form to info@starlightcommunitytheater.com prior to the audition. You can also send a headshot and resume if you have them.

Submit a video to info@starlightcommunitytheater.com as described below in the CASTING section prior to the audition.

Rehearsals will be scheduled based on actor availability.  Performances are scheduled for October 23-November 1.  This is subject to change if the pandemic continues to present difficulties for large gatherings of people.

The Story:

The mysterious Count Dracula has gone to England where he is living on a large estate next to an insane asylum run by the incredibly naive Dr. Seward. The others that make up the cast of this thriller include Professor Van Helsing who must convince Dr. Seward that Count Dracula is a vampire; Renfield, a fly-eating lunatic who serves the Count (once too often); beautiful Lucy Westenra, who has an uncanny resemblance to a girl Count Dracula loved over a hundred years ago; Charles, the Westenra family butler whose poor eyesight saves him from being hypnotized; as well as three female vampires!

Casting:

There are roles for approximately 9 men and 7 women.  This is an adult 16+ production.  There is also the opportunity for 4 youth to be added.

The director is looking for actors who move well, have good radio voices and who are not body shy. There will be an online vocal audition where I want them to tell stories. I would also like a video submission of some kind of movement piece... mime, dance (particularly ballet or lyrical), Tai Chi, tumbling, etc. Some possibility of a movement cast and a voice cast.

Spotlight Youth Theatre seeks BIPOC creative team and writers for new show - ANTIRACIST KIDS

Kenny Grossman, the Artistic Director at Spotlight Youth Theatre, has written an outline for a play called ANTIRACIST KIDS that he plans to stage at Spotlight.

The show's creative team needs to be BIPOC and Grossman feels the show can be impactful, powerful and yet fun. He also feels that real change in theatre starts at the foundation, not at the top and that youth theatre is a giant part of that foundation.

Grossman is looking for writers, directors, designers, a choreographer, etc. and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to “Black Lives Matter”.

If anyone is interested in being involved in this show or wants to talk more about it, text Grossman at 623-521-8093 or email him at kenny@spotlightyouththeatre.org

Starlight Community Theater to present Live Stream production of RADIUM GIRLS, August 28-August 30

RADIUM GIRLS

Presented by Starlight Community Theater

Performances will be livestreamed - links will be sent after tickets are purchased.

Friday, August 28 at 7pm

Saturday, August 29 at 2pm

Sunday, August 30 at 2pm

Tickets are $15 for individual access and $25 for group access.  Tickets are available at: http://www.starlightcommunitytheater.com

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.

Arizona Theatre Company presents an online reading of ALMA through August 22

ALMA

By Benjamin Benne

Directed by Catherine María Rodríguez

This is an online reading as part of our Digital Season.

A mother, a daughter and the thread of an American Dream. Working mom Alma has singlehandedly raised her daughter, Ángel, on tough love, home-cooked comida, and lots of prayers. But on the eve of the all-important SAT, Alma discovers her daughter isn’t at home studying. A schooling and la chancla await Ángel at home—but so does a creeping realization that more’s at stake than just a test score. A sacrifice from Alma’s past weighs heavy on their present; now, Alma fears that her worst nightmare may soon be their reality. Will the American Dream cost them a life together?
