audition notice - INSPECTING CAROL & A CHRISTMAS CAROL - Fountain Hills Theater - October 14 &15

A Christmas Carol:  The return of our tradition.  Join us as miserly old Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas.

This show will be presented in repertory with:

Inspecting Carol:  This is a very funny play about a theater company that does ‘A Christmas Carol’ every year.  (!) Because an inspector from the National Endowment for the Arts is arriving, they try to make the Dicken’s classic ‘politically correct’.  Everything that can go wrong- does.


A Christmas Carol will be directed by Peter J. Hill,
musically directed by Jay Melberg, and choreographed by Noel Irick
Inspecting Carol will be directed by Peter J. Hill


Audition Dates:
Saturday, October 14th at 1pm & Sunday, October 15th at 6pm

Production dates:
Christmas Carol - Nov. 30, Dec. 2, 8, 10, 14, 16, 22 & 24
Inspecting Carol - Dec. 1, 3, 7, 9, 15, 17, 21 & 23
Performance Times: Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm

Auditioners should prepare:
- 16 to 32 bars of a song that best shows off their voice
- Bring sheet music in appropriate key. No CD’s
- 1 minute comedic monologue
- Dress to move for dance audition.
- Headshot and resume if available
- List of possible rehearsal conflicts

Several roles in A Christmas Carol will also play roles in Inspecting Carol.  Rehearsals are scheduled to follow each other, but still remain within a 3 - 3½ hour rehearsal time frame.

*Jacob Marley   40+  Good singer.  The haunting and haunted ghost of Scrooge’s partner.  (Doubles as Sidney Carlton in Inspecting Carol)

*Young Ebenezer/Fred Party Guest/Quartet  20-30 years, Great singer, great comic abilities.  Scrooge as a young man. (Doubles as Kevin Emery or Wayne Wellacre in Inspecting Carol)

*Scrooge’s Nephew Fred/Townsperson  20-40 years, non-singing.  Scrooge’s likable nephew.
(Doubles as Kevin Emery or Wayne Wellacre in Inspecting Carol)

*Tom Jenkins/Fred Party Guest/Townsperson  Any age, African-American, good singer.  Tom is the friendly soup man. (Doubles as Walter E. Parsons in Inspecting Carol)

Mr. Fezziwig/Quartet/Townsperson  40+, good singer.  Scrooge’s jolly, kind, first employer.

*Mrs. Campbell/Fred’s Party Guest/Townsperson  30+  A washer woman. (Doubles as MJ McMam in Inspecting Carol)

Mr. Brockett/Fred’s Party Guest/Townsperson  30+ A dignified man

Mr. Simpson/Townsperson  30+ A dignified man

*Bob Cratchit    30+  Good singer.  Scrooge’s put upon, but kindly clerk.  (Doubles as Phil Hewlitt in Inspecting Carol)

*Mrs. Cratchit  30 + Bob’s strong willed, but gentle wife. (Doubles as Dorothy Tree Hapgood in Inspecting Carol)

*Tiny Tim  8+  Great singer  (Possibly doubles as Luther Betty in Inspecting Carol)

Martha Cratchit  8+  Good singer

Peter Cratchit  12+  Good singer

Turkey Boy/Urchin  8+  (Possibly doubles as Luther Betty in Inspecting Carol)

*Dick Wilkins/Fred’s Party Guest/Quartet/Townsperson    12+  Scrooge’s fellow apprentice under Fezziwig. (Possibly doubles as Luther Betty in Inspecting Carol)

Isabelle/Fred’s Party Guest/Quartet/Townsperson  20-30  Great singer.  Scrooge’s first love.

Ebby/Townsperson  8-12 Scrooge as a young boy.

Fan/Fred’s Party Guest/Townsperson  12-16  Scrooge’s lovely young sister.

INSPECTING CAROL

All roles in Inspecting Carol are from actors also appearing in A Christmas Carol

Zorah Bloch - Founding director of The Soapbox Playhouse. In her 40’s. Extremely self-concerned.

Sidney Carlton - In his 60’s. A founding member of the Company. Kind but somewhat addled.

Dorothy Tree Hapgood - Sidney’s wife. In her 60’s. English and unable to lose her accent. A founding member.

Phil Hewlitt - In his 40’s. Small, obsessive usually plays the ineffectual character in any Soapbox production. A founding member.

Walter E. Parsons - African-American in his 30’s. Recently taken up acting again after a stint in the armed forces. Good natured - excitable.

Luther Beatty - A large eleven-year-old. He’s.been playing Tiny Tim two years too long. Extremely friendly.

Kevin Emery - A nervous man in the impossible position of managing director. In his 40’s. Afraid of Zorah.

MJ (Mary Jane) McMann - ln her 40’s. A realist. She long ago realized that the Company hit bottom. She looks on now as a bemused observer. Founding member.

Wayne Wellacre - In his 30’s, in search of a new career in acting, no training, less talent, affable, eager to please.
